Jewellery Valuations

A professional jewellery valuation provides an accurate and independent assessment of your jewellery’s value. Whether required for insurance, probate, resale, or personal knowledge, our valuations are carried out with care, expertise, and attention to detail.

Each piece is carefully examined by a qualified gemmologist to assess materials, craftsmanship, condition, and current market factors. You’ll receive a clear, detailed valuation report that is suitable for insurance purposes.

Loose Gemstones

Synthetic and artificially treated gemstones are passing through the trade undetected. A synthetic gemstone has the same chemical composition as the natural stone and is optically and physically the same. A qualified gemmologist is the only person who can distinguish between the two by studying the characteristics of the gemstone.

For a positive identification which confirms the type of stone (no grading) the cost is R400 (ex VAT) per stone.

Gemstone Identification

Gemstone identifications and certifications are for all natural gemstones – due to the popular demand for laboratory grown moissanite we have a unique report for them as requested by the trade. Diamonds are graded by experienced gemmologists and well trained staff. Each diamond gets graded by three staff members and the final grade by a qualified gemmologist.

The gem identification report for coloured gemstones has the following information: Reference number, gemstone name, weight, cut / shape, dimensions, colour description, clarity grade and finish. If the stone has characteristics unique to a particular origin it will be mentioned on the report.

The price for this service starts from R300 (ex VAT). Please download our latest price list.

Coloured Stone Grading

A full coloured stone report takes all the characteristics of the stone in to account to reach a final grade that relates to price. We are one of the few laboratories in the world that offer this service.  We offer a passport size report which includes a picture of the gemstone. For credit card size reports on coloured stones we suggest the mini coloured stone report.

The details of the gemstones for the full reports contain the following information: Reference number, gemstone species and variety, weight, cut / shape, dimensions, colour description, colour grade, tone, clarity grade, brilliance, finish, final grade and an image.

For the mini report the following information is included: Reference number, gemstone variety, weight, cut/shape, dimensions, colour description, clarity and finish.

We use the ICSL coloured stone grading system which has proved itself to be the most efficient and user-friendly coloured stone grading system since 1982. Many large laboratories around the world use this system. It is the most consistent system I have ever come across. Ian Campbell who developed the system introduced the FINAL GRADE which relates directly to price. For more information on this system click below.

Rough Gemstone Assessment

The grading and valuing of rough gemstones takes knowledge and experience.

The price for this service is R800 (ex VAT) per stone or R1800 per hour (ex VAT) for parcels of stones.

The tanzanite when viewed under tungsten lighting through the one polaroid you will see a bluish colour and through the other filter a reddish violet colour. This is characteristic of tanzanite. Through the coloured filter, tanzanite will appear red. It is important to get the two different colours and the red colour for it to pass as tanzanite.

Get your Tanzanite Filter for only R650. This will assist in separating all the imitations from tanzanite, rough or cut.

Forensic Analysis (report)

The client may want to know why a stone broke or looks different. This is a scientific study and I believe only two of us offer this service in South Africa.
