A division of The Gem Lab, founded in Durban in 1989.
The lab was affiliated to Ian Campbell’s ICSL lab, until Ian’s retirement in 2009.
Alongside his encyclopaedic knowledge of gemstones, Jeremy’s career extends to exclusive jewellery retail management and design, giving him a well-rounded knowledge of the industry. He also spent two years running the European Gemological Lab (EGL) in Cape Town, where he indulged his love of teaching by lecturing in the college. He is an accredited senior gemologist through AGA (Acredited Gemologists Association).

BASIC GEM IDENTIFICATION
This course is available online as well as a one-day course. The cost for the online course is R850 and the day course is R2800. If you enrol for the online course and feel you would like to attend the classroom course we will credit you with the fee you paid for the online course. This course covers the following:
- Jeweller’s Loupe
- Refractometer
- Specific Gravity
- Identification
REFRACTOMETER AND POLARISCOPE
The refractometer is one of the three most important instruments used to identify gemstones. This is a short morning course explain how the refractometer works and how polaroid’s play an important role in gem identification. The cost for this course is R500
PRACTICAL DIAMOND GRADING
The first part of this course is online which explains some theory and grading methods. Once you have completed the online part you will need to attend a one day practical at our college. This is all inclusive of the price which is R6500.
PRACTICAL ROUGH DIAMOND GRADING
The first part of this course is online which explains some theory and grading methods. Once you have completed the online part you will need to attend a one day practical at our college. This is all inclusive of the price which is R15000. If you are wanting to deal in rough diamonds then you would have to apply to the South African regulator which will require a certificate that you have attended a course.
JEWELLERY VALUATIONS
If you know how to identify, grade and value coloured stones and diamonds then you can do the online course which is R650. If not we offer a three day course which covers one day Basic Gem Identification, one day of diamond grading and the third day is putting it all together which actually takes a morning.
